I was a teenager in Somalia and Tanzania. Our parents immersed our family in music, drama and art. Because of this I knew from an early age that much of the music, language, dance - entire cultures are dispersing, falling prey to the relentless march of modernity.
In 1997, i wrote a proposal to the Government of Tanzania. The “Urithi Arts Program” was simple:
Id bring the studio and know how to Dar Es Salaam, the Government would help identify endangered music, we would record it and install said recordings into the National Archives.
The Government agreed and we got going on the adventure of a lifetime.
While in Tanzania, I produced and recorded lots of contemporary music too. Limitless Sky Records is where I release this music .
None of this would have been possible without Rosa Costanza, Day Mlango, Geoffrey Clarfield, Mr. Ruyembe and Mr. Luhala, BASATA and the Ministry of Education and Culture, Ann Outwater and Geoffrey Magama.
My Sincere and Heartfelt Gratitude to each of you.
And my Eternal Gratitude to all the amazing musicians and Artists who decided (and continue) to trust me with their beautiful music and to my family and friends who have supported this improbable endeavor since 1997.
Giving Thanks, Michel Tyabji
